Ruth Garnetta Greene

August 1, 1916 — October 23, 2017

Ruth Garnetta Slie Greene, of Toledo, passed away October 23, 2017 at the age of 101. She was born August 1, 1916 to the late Charles Frederick and Ida (Bickerton) Slie in McMechen, WV, where Ruth grew up and graduated from Benwood High School. She was introduced to the love of her life, George William Greene, who was a friend of her brother. They were married for 51 years until his death in 1988. They resided in Dillonvale, Ohio for 13 years and Toledo for more than 50 years. A lifelong homemaker, Ruth was a skilled cook and baker and enjoyed entertaining her family. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lotus Chapter 477 in Toledo. Ruth was an active member of Euclid Avenue United Methodist Church for 47 years, working with various fellowship services and cooking and serving lunch to the homeless every Wednesday. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader at East Side Elementary School in the late 1950s and was also active with her Womens Bowling Team and Bunko Club. While living in Dillonvale, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Womens Auxiliary for the Volunteer Fire Department. Ruth is lovingly survived by her sister, Laura V. Lewis of Weirton, WV; children, Constance M. Fisher of Louisville, KY, Jacqueline L. Anderson of Spring, TX, E. William Greene of The Woodlands, TX and Georgeann Kohn of Toledo; grandchildren, Charles Fisher, Kelly Matwick, Michael Fisher, Stephen Fisher, Amanda Miller, Todd Greene, Wade Kohn, Peter Miller, Mark Kohn, Christopher Greene, Sally Courtier, Ann Bonz, Benjamin Greene and Sarah Greene; great grandchildren, Reese and Evan Fisher, Mackenzie Matwick, Kaitlyn Greene, Jacqueline and Peter Miller, Lana Miller Freedberg, Emmeline and Annabelle Courtier and Sebastian Bonz. She was also preceded in death by six brothers, Arthur, Harold, Charles, Clyde, Herbert and Thomas. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 12:00 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.). Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Memorial contributions are suggested to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517 or a charity of the donors choice.
