Russell J. Schumacher, 78, of Genoa, died Thursday evening, March 2, 2017, at Otterbein-Portage Valley in Pemberville. Russ was born February 20, 1939, in Genoa, Ohio, to William H. and Florence (Frazier) Schumacher. On April 2, 1960, in Genoa he married Barbara A. Hoeft, who preceded him in death after 56 years of marriage on October 4, 2016. Russ was born and raised on his familys farm and consequently was a lifetime farmer retiring in 2001. He loved taking care of his large garden and the flowers. Russ was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in Genoa. He loved to laugh and have a fun time. His friends and family were special to him, and he enjoyed attending his grandchildrens sports and other activities. Russ is survived by his daughter, Karen (Ed) Ellison of Elyria and son, Kent (Lana) Schumacher of Genoa, his grandchildren, Nicholas Taylor, Jaime (Cory) Brown, Brooke Schumacher and Adam (Rochelle) Schumacher, and great granddaughters, Haedyn and Nora LeeAnn Schumacher. His parents and wife preceded him in death. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m., Monday March 6, 2017, at St. Johns United Church of Christ, Genoa, where the funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. The interment will follow in Clay Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials for Russ to be given to St. Johns UCC, 1213 Washington St., Genoa, OH 43430; or the Allen-Clay Joint Fire Dist. #36, 101 E. 6th St., Genoa, OH 43430.
