Russell "Russ" Comers

February 26, 1939 — June 1, 2025

Russell D. Comers, 86, of Toledo, Ohio, went home to be in heaven with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo. Russell was born on February 26, 1939, in Toledo, the son of William and Marie (Reidel) Comers.

After he graduated from Scott High School, Russ continued his education at the University of Toledo before beginning his 32-year career with First Federal Savings & Loan. While at First Federal, Russ worked as an operations clerk, assistant branch manager, for 4 years before becoming a branch manager for 15 years. While he was a branch manager, he opened four new branch locations. He implemented the checking account department for the bank. He was promoted to a human resource manager where he was named vice president until the bank was sold. After his retirement with First Federal, Russ worked at JC Penney as a sales associate in the furniture department for 11 years, followed by The University of Toledo Academic Test Department, where he was promoted to a supervisor, for 10 additional years.

When Russ wasn’t working, he was sure to be found with one of his basset hounds. Through the years, Russ owned 7 different basset hounds. He loved their droopy looks and watching the slobber fly when they would shake their heads.

Russ became a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church on December 11, 1952, and was the second longest member of the church. Through his involvement with the church, Russ was a deacon and member of the finance committee. He enjoyed being an usher as well as a junior high Sunday school teacher.

On March 26, 1966, Russell married the love of his life, Judith (Romaker) Comers, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. They enjoyed many trips to The Great Smoky Mountains as well as attending the Fulton County Fair. He loved spending time with his grandchildren when they would visit.

Left to cherish his memory includes daughter, Jill (Rob) Tyndale; grandchildren, Jacob, Molly, and Natalie Tyndale; daughter, Heidi (Tim) Overdorf; granddaughter, Jessica Overdorf; many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith; his parents, William and Marie Comers; and his brother, Richard A. Comers.

Visitation will take place on June 6, 2025, from 10:00 am -11:00 am at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 4207 W. Laskey Road, Toledo, OH 43623, with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 am. The burial will take place immediately after the service at Toledo Memorial Park. Online condolences to the family may be made at walkerfuneralhomes.com.
