Roy James "Jim" Neff

March 11, 1955 — November 10, 2025

Roy James “Jim” Neff, born in Port Clinton, Ohio to Roy and Edna (Davis) Neff, passed away surrounded by those he loved. From the beginning, Jim was a protector—especially of his four sisters—and a steadfast believer that family extended beyond bloodlines to anyone he held close.

Jim worked many different jobs throughout his life, but his true passion was always with horses. A horseman at his core, he worked with horses in countless ways, helping others learn to ride and connect with these majestic animals. His inventive spirit led him to create tools and techniques for handling even the most unruly horses—earning him admiration from many in the local horse community. But his influence stretched far beyond his home borders.

Known affectionately to some as “Jim-rigger,” he had a knack for making things work, no matter how unconventional the method. Whether it was leatherwork, repurposing old items, or fixing something with whatever was on hand, Jim’s hands were always busy. He found joy in the outdoors, especially hunting, and was a country boy through and through.

Jim was a quiet mentor, guiding others without seeking recognition. He was a caregiver at heart—always present and generous. Whether it was helping someone through a tough time or cooking biscuits and gravy for a house full of his daughters’ friends, Jim gave of himself freely and with love.

Jim is survived by his daughters: Jessie Neff and Janna Neff; grandchildren: Grace Neff and Tony Habel; siblings: Donna Neff, Rosemary (John) Ahrens, Charlene (Michael) Carter, and Charley Neff; niece and nephew: Sarah (Tom) Trout and Quinton (Lindsay) Mulligan; grandnieces and grandnephews: Peyton, Sawyer, Wyland, Smith, Brynn, and Lauran; best friend and brother in Christ: Mike Gentry. He also shared a special bond with Mike’s daughters, Emma (Grant) Trudel and Alison (Mike) Derringer He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Susan T. Roberts.

Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 4–7 PM at Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, 216 Washington Street, Port Clinton, Ohio. A memorial service will follow at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel.

Jim’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed.
