Ronald William Powell

April 27, 1943 — June 21, 2020

Ronald William Powell Born April 27, 1943 Cleveland, OH Died June 21, 2020 Toledo, OH Loving husband to Sheila, Loving father to Donna Krupka (Frank), David (Melissa), Greg (Kim), Brian (Amanda) Lee, Angie (John) Humphrey, Staci (Adam) Stimmel. Preceded in death by father John Henry and mother Marjorie Carleton Powell, and brother Gerald (Betty) Powell. Survived by his brothers Wesley (Geraldine), John (Linda) and James (Dorothy) and numerous nieces and nephews. Whether he went by Papa Ron or Grandpa Powell he loved his 26 grandchildren and 6 great grandsons. His favorite times were spent with them, bringing his adventurous spirit to his grandchildren engaging them in the things he loved to do and spending his most precious time with them. Ron grew up in the Collinwood neighborhood on the Eastside of Cleveland and attended St. Joseph’s grade school and then St. Joseph’s high school. He attended night school at Cleveland State graduating with an accounting degree and later an MBA from Baldwin-Wallace. He worked for several companies on the east side of Cleveland until 1989 when he relocated to Oak Harbor and began work at Davis-Besse. After retiring he spent several years teaching at Terra State Community College on a variety of computer and business classes while also working part time at the Anderson’s store in Woodville in their fine foods and wine department. He most recently worked at Robinson-Walker funeral home in Oak Harbor. Ron has always been active in his community, as a political activist in suburban Euclid fighting for improved city services and safety measures. He helped run the Eastlawn Homeowners Association in Euclid and their annual holiday party and block party. He has been involved in his local Catholic Church throughout his life, as a member of the Knights of Columbus and serving in several roles in the 4th degree and the Oak Harbor chapter of the Knights. He also was a regular volunteer at the Food Pantry and served on the parish counsel and as a leader in Christ Renews his Parish. He could be found at the water stops assisting with Bike to the Bay and ringing the bell for the Salvation Army around the holidays. He was a fixture pulling the giant air balloon in the Toledo holiday parade. He was also quick to volunteer a “Powell Joke” to anyone who would stand around long enough to listen. His hobbies have evolved over time from his home wine making adventures to moving into enjoyment of higher quality wine. He was a founding member of the neighborhood investment club. He was an avid Cleveland sports fan and enjoyed taking in baseball games with his children and grandchildren when a game happened to be near. He was an assistant coach on countless baseball, football, softball and soccer teams and when not coaching was a VOCAL supporter of his children. He was always attending the events of his children and grandchildren. He loved to golf with his lifelong friends and family and the Atwood Lake vacation crew. He was known to jump into a volleyball game or two during his younger days. He would take daily walks in the woods searching for deer and bald eagles and also bird watch in Crane Creek Park. He took great pride in his garden. He loved to travel and see something new, especially when being able to share these discoveries with his wonderful wife Sheila. Together they saw the glaciers of Alaska to the clear water while cruising through the Caribbean, family trips to Wisconsin Dells and the desert of Arizona and Nevada. Often they gathered their family and friends to join them on their adventures. Ron’s last great adventure on earth has passed but he is now on to a much greater adventure in his next life. Remember his love of life, family and friends as you continue your own journey in life. ** The services for Ron are now confirmed.
