Ronald Buchanan

January 4, 1935 — March 11, 2017

Ronald Alexander Buchanan of Perrysburg passed away on March 11, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Ron was born in Detroit on January 4, 1935 to Thomas and Rhena (Gilbert) Buchanan. Ron was a kind, thoughtful, and generous man who was always a gentlemen and good sport. The majority of his career was spent in the sales, service and rental of forklift trucks and industrial equipment. Ron was owner and president of Buchanan Equipment, Inc. After retirement, not one to sit still, he started his own company as a wholesale distributor of premium quality imported cigars supplying many golf courses, clubs, and stores in Northwest Ohio and Southeastern Michigan. He developed a deep knowledge of cigars and was meticulous in his humidor displays. He was known as “The Cigar Man.” Ron was an avid sailor and sailboat racer, sailing out of Jolly Roger Sailing Club in Point Place, participating in many AYC and ILYA regattas, club races, Mills Trophy Races, and the annual Bay Week Regatta at Put-In-Bay. Ron also loved to play golf, and played competitive tennis throughout his life. Ron was deeply loved and will be dearly missed. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife and best friend Carole L. (Yager) Buchanan, children Mark (Lisa) Buchanan of Virginia, Bonnie Buchanan and Paul Buchanan, both of California, daughter-in-law Carole Beth Buchanan of Wisconsin, grandchildren Stephenie (Richard) Penterman and Elizabeth (Shane) Buchanan of Wisconsin, Douglas and Nealon Buchanan of Virginia, and great granddaughters Lilly and McKinley Buchanan-Beegle, mother-in-law Louise Yager, sister-in-law Gayle (Mike) Bayer and special cat, Abby. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, son David Buchanan, father-in-law Richard Yager, and former spouse Carol S. Buchanan. There will be a private family service on Thursday, March 16, 2017 with interment at St. Rose Cemetery in Perrysburg. As a tribute to his valiant fight against Alzheimer’s, the family kindly asks that any memorials in Ron’s name be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Northwest Ohio, 2500 N. Reynolds Road, Toledo, OH 43615. Arrangements were entrusted to Witzler Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg, Ohio (419-874-3133). Online condolences may be left at witzlershank.com
