Ronald Edward Boehme

April 9, 1937 — January 7, 2023

Ronald E. Boehme, age 85, of Toledo passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023, in West Park Place. He was born April 9, 1937, in Toledo, Ohio, to Henry and Edna (Shannon) Boehme, the youngest of three sons. He was raised in Lambertville, MI, and attended Bedford schools. As an excellent athlete, he played many sports in high school and football at the University of Toledo, where he also earned his B.A. Ron taught at the junior high in Bedford, before and after his ROTC commitment with the US Army. He coached the baseball team during their high school championship in the 1963-64 school year.

Ron rejoined the military, in 1965, and although his branch was military police, he had various assignments. He met his wife Donna, on his first assignment to Presidio of San Francisco, CA, and during an assignment in KS, he obtained his master’s degree in physical education. After his second tour in Viet Nam, he taught for the Army and was assigned a teaching tour in the Office of Physical Education at the Military Academy at West Point, NY where he taught swimming, bowling, golf, and coached football. The army took the couple from coast to coast (California to Virginia) and to Germany throughout his 26 years. Ron taught Leadership at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN and retired as the Professor of Military Science (PMS) there.

Ron was a war hero, he earned 5 Bronze Star medals, a Purple Heart, and many other medals throughout his military career. More importantly, he was a loving and devoted husband and father, a good friend and a “soldier’s soldier.” Ron was an educator, mentor, and role model. He literally influenced hundreds, if not thousands of young leaders, instilling in them the importance of taking care of those under your command.

After retiring from the army, Ron returned to Toledo and worked for Continental Security, as Chief of Security for many years. Very active in the community, Ron was past president of Toledo Lions Club, and Elks. He was a devoted Christian and an active, long-time member of the King of Glory Lutheran Church community.

He was an avid golfer where he scored a hole-in-one twice, played in several leagues and always had a rubber snake or some kind of noisemaker to help someone out when they were looking for a ball hit into the woods. He and his wife enjoyed their later years wintering and playing golf in Arizona.

Ron was a thoughtful, generous, and loving man to his family and friends, he always made time for them. He was a great cook and a people person who loved life. He could always be counted on for solid and sound advice, and if you had real problems to consider, he’d help you drink too much to make it better. A great joke teller, he is still trying to sell that duck to a deaf person. He lived by the motto: live hard, play hard and work hard.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Richard “Dick” Boehme, Sr. and Robert “Bob” Boehme, Sr. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Donna (Roycht) Boehme; sons, Michael (Sharon) and Nicholas Boehme; daughter, Nancy Jo (Steve Lovalenti) Rasky; grandchildren, Heather (Nate) Lewis and Daniel, Erin, and Elizabeth (Justin) Kelly; sisters-in-law, Charlene Roycht and Lola and Evelyn Boehme; and a large loving Boehme Clan.
