Roland R. Ron Elwing, 62, of Genoa, Ohio died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 in Mercy-St. Charles Hospital, Oregon Ohio after a short illness. Ron was born in Port Clinton, Ohio on September 28, 1947 to Lewis H. and Ruth L. Sutton Elwing. He married Kay A. Dufendock in Elliston, Ohio on June 8, 1968 and she survives. Ron was an engineer and had worked at the Chrysler Machining Plant in Perrysburg, Ohio for 36 years retiring in 2005. In 2006 Ron started teaching drafting classes in the engineering department of the University of Toledo. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army. During his military service he played football for the Army team while stationed in Zweibruckn, Germany. He also enjoyed coaching childrens football and basketball while in Germany. In his spare time Ron enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, and attending UT football games; he was a season ticket holder for many years. Survivors of Ron include his wife of almost 42 years, Kay, daughter, Erika A. James Mihlbauer and son R. Dirk Elwing, all of Genoa, parents, Lewis and Ruth Elwing of Martin, OH, granddaughter, Olivia K. Mihlbauer, his siblings, Daryl Louise Elwing, of Northwood, OH, Pat Jerry Everhardt of Genoa, brother-in-law, Jan P. Melody Dufendock, and sister-in-law Marsha Dufendock, both of Genoa along with a host of nieces and nephews. A private graveside service, along with military honors for Ron, was conducted in the Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. The family suggests that memorial contributions in Rons memory be made to the Allen-Clay Joint Fire District, Station #3, 101 W. 6th Street, Genoa, OH 43430, or the Ohio Veterans Home, 3416 Columbus Ave. Sandusky, OH 44870. The Robinson-Walker Funeral Home and Crematory, 501 West St. Genoa, OH 43430 is assisting the family with arrangements.
