Roger Woodbury, soft-spoken, yet quick-witted family man died peacefully on February 10, 2021 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, where he requested to receive care when his lymphoma returned. He was the first-born of three siblings to parents Roy and Grace Woodbury of Youngstown, Ohio. He attended Ohio University in Athens where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a master’s degree in Sanitary Engineering, proving correct the aptitude test that had originally suggested his engineering potential. Before leaving Athens, he wed fellow Bobcat Marge (Wright) Woodbury in the campus chapel the same day of her graduation. They observed their 55th wedding anniversary in January separated by a window, but able to lock eyes and share a smile. Roger and Marge moved to Toledo when he joined the engineering firm known at the time as Finkbeiner, Pettis, & Strout (now Arcadis). He worked there his entire career, rising to the level of Partner in 1989. Roger was a registered civil engineer in multiple states and proud to be a life member of American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation. He was also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ohio Water Environment Association. He treasured the cards, letters, and emails that he received from colleagues and mentees upon his retirement. Roger and Marge have two children, Pam (Cliff) Langdon and Mike (Kelly) Woodbury, who both have unending respect, love, and gratitude for their dad’s caring nature, intelligence, generosity, and dedication. Roger adored his grandson, J.T. Langdon, and took an active interest in his education and musical pursuits. Uncle Roger will be missed by his niece, three nephews, and their families. Roger could often be found fishing at local lakes when the weather cooperated. He had an incredible attention to detail and documented every catch in a log he would share with his brother David (Marcie, dec.) Woodbury (also a retired engineer and fisherman). He carried over the same attention to detail to the removal of leaves, snow, sticks, grass clippings etc. from the yard of the house he and Marge called home for 45 years. Together they enjoyed the many trips they took to Florida to visit his sister Joan (Steve) Mock and their family. He loved 50’s and 60’s music mostly, but in the past few years became a big percussion/steel drum fan while attending countless performances by his grandson at Toledo School for the Arts and Butler University. Roger loved to laugh. He would often email comic strips from the paper to anyone he thought would enjoy receiving them, and we always did. His sense of humor was very clever and greatly appreciated by all who knew him. He enjoyed watching the wildlife in his backyard and was an exceptional Scrabble player. Roger was an honest, funny, hard-working, and caring person. While the world is not as bright without him, the fish are safer. Above all, he loved his family, who will miss him greatly. Per Roger’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date. For those who wish to honor his memory with a donation, please consider the American Cancer Society or Toledo School for the Arts. Arrangements were entrusted to the Walker Funeral Home.
