Roger Rummel

March 24, 1935 — December 27, 2025

Roger Lee Rummel passed away on December 27 at the age of 90. Roger was born in Toledo, Ohio on March 24, 1935 to Iola (Brown) Rummel and Ronald Lewis Rummel. Roger was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School (class of 1952) and Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University) in central Texas.

For twenty-five years, Roger owned and operated Thur-O-Wash, a full‑service carwash known for meticulous care and neighborly service. Customers fondly remember Roger as always ready to share a joke, and proud to know everybody by name and send them on their way with a sparkling clean car. Thur-O-Wash was more than a local family business—Roger created a place of opportunity and friendship. He led by example: show up early, do the job well, and treat everyone with respect.

Roger traces his lifelong commitment to community service back to his position as a line leader in the third grade, where he was charged with cutting hand towels to distribute to classmates. During his adult life, he served on the Board of Directors for Ohio Citizens bank and as president of various charitable organizations, including the Ability Center of Northwest Ohio, the Samaritan Counseling Center, the Toledo Rotary Club, and the Greater Toledo Dental Society. He also served as a board member of the International Car Wash Association and as president of the Central States Car Wash Association. Roger was a proud founding member of Stone Oak Country Club, where he enjoyed countless rounds of golf, two holes-in-one, and spending time with friends and family.

Roger was formerly a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Ottawa Hills.

Everyone who knew Roger loved Roger—for his gentle kindness, his love of making others laugh, and his endless generosity of spirit. Roger cherished his family and friends.

Roger was a proud father to Heidi Lee Rummel, Matthew Morton Rummel, Ryan Lewis Rummel, and Suzy Kolady Rummel (Matthew); and a very special “Poppa” to his grandchildren, Laura Lee Rummel (Logan Crouch), Jonathan Rummel Krone, Charlotte Rummel Krone, Annie Rose Rummel Krone, Caroline Murray, and Thomas Murray. Roger is survived by his dear friend Jane Steger, who has become a cherished part of the Rummel family, and his sister, Suzanne (Alfred) Garner. His family adored him and will miss him tremendously.

Roger was preceded in death by his adoring wife, Marjorie Morton Rummel. They fell in love on the ski slopes of Michigan and were married for nearly 50 years. Roger lovingly cared for Margie through her long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Roger spent Christmas 2025 with his children. He passed away filled with gratitude for a wonderful life well-lived.
