Roger Dorn

ROGER C. DORN Roger C. Dorn, 90, of Perrysburg, OH died Friday, August 19, 2011 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. He was born on February 21, 1921 in West Jeffersonville, OH to Raymond and Donna (Carr) Dorn. Roger graduated from Columbus North High School and attended The Ohio State University. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 where he became a bomber navigator in the Air Corp and rose to the rank of Captain. He served in Italy accomplishing 52 missions very quickly. When the war ended, Roger was selected to fly photographic missions for the atomic bomb tests on the Atoll Bikini. He was awarded the air medal and distinguished flying cross. Prior to going overseas, Roger married Susan Mae Ruth on August 11, 1943. After the war the Dorns soon moved back to Columbus and Roger became employed by Copco Papers where he quickly became promoted. The family then moved to Maumee, OH where Roger was the VP General Manager of Copco’s Toledo branch. He remained with Copco for over 32 years moving to Perrysburg in 1958. In 1977 Roger, along with his wife Susan, started Perrysburg Office Supply Co. until 1990 when they sold the business and their home and moved to Hilton Head, SC where they had many friends and enjoyed their church and the water. In 2001 they moved back to Perrysburg to be close to their family. Roger was an active member of the Maumee, Perrysburg, and Hilton Head Presbyterian Churches serving as an usher and Elder, and had also served in the session and on many committees. He was also active in the community and was an active member of the National Exchange Club and the Toledo Sales and Marketing Association. He was a founding member of Elm House in Perrysburg and also volunteered at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Roger loved to fish, hunt, garden, travel, spend time with his beloved family, and was a proud Buckeye. Roger is survived by his wife, Susan; son, Robert L. Dorn of Bowling Green, OH; daughters, Carol (Douglas) Dean of Oregon, OH and Nancy D. (Robb) Gates of Perrysburg, OH; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, G. Neal Dorn. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Second St. in Perrysburg. Burial services will be private. Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to the Perrysburg Presbyterian Church Missions or to the WoodLane Residential Services, 545 Pearl St., Bowling Green, OH 43402. Arrangements are being handled by Witzler-Shank Funeral Home in Perrysburg (419-874-3133).
