Roger Allen Bowman

After a long, hard-fought battle with cancer, Roger Bowman, 76, departed from this world to go home to be with our Lord on Thursday November 24th. Roger was born March 20, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Schuyler and Livonia Dunn Bowman. Roger was a 1953 graduate of DeVilbiss High School. He earned his Bachelors of Education degree in 1957 and his Masters degree in 1965. Both of these from the University of Toledo. Roger taught in the Toledo Public Schools for 34 years. He taught at Birmingham, Pickett, and Riverside elementary schools and physical education at Leverette Jr. High School. He also coached many junior high sports while teaching at these schools including volleyball 1965-79, basketball 1959-91, track 1968-91, soccer 1968-79. He also coached football 1959-75 for the North Toledo Oldtimers Football Association and baseball for his son and nephews teams Roger was an avid old movie and music buff. He also worked part time as an assistant manager from 1975-84 at the former Southwyck AMC movie theatres. He was also a big Chicago White Sox fan. He was one of the oldest living members of Calvary United Methodist Church where he served on several committees and as an usher. Roger is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Barbara Skelding Bowman, of 53 years; son Ken Karen Bowman, son Rev. Daniel Celina Bowman; seven grandchildren Paul Elizabeth, Steven, David, Alyssa, Abigail, Andrew, and Jacob; one great granddaughter Ada, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Schuyler and Livonia, and his older brother Robert. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, on Detroit Avenue, for their kindness and care of Roger and his family during the final weeks of his life. Visitation will be Sunday from 1-8 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. where funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 28, 2011. Rogers Pastor, the Rev. Bob Baugher, will preside with burial to follow at Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial gifts may be given in memory of Roger to Calvary United Methodist Church or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
