Our beloved husband, father, uncle, and friend R.C. Young, a resident of StoryPoint Senior Living community in Waterville, died Friday, September 13 after a brief illness. The son of Dr. Roland Young and Ruth Beam Young, R.C. grew up in South Toledo, attending Libbey High School and the University of Toledo. He married Nancy Marley in 1954 and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Nancy, their daughter Amy Keil, four nieces and a nephew survive him.
His sisters Madelynn Wright Redpath and Barbara Walker, as well as all of his in-laws and several nieces and nephews, predeceased him.
An entrepreneur and business man, R.C. started a number of successful business, including Young Medical Equipment Company of Toledo, and Toledo I.V. He also invested in and developed commercial and residential real estate, and supervised the building of several of his residences, including a home in Kissimmee Florida.
Always very active in the community, R.C. was a Master Mason of the Grand Lodge Ohio Free and Accepted Masons, Barton Smith Lodge #613 for 67 years, and a member of the Zenobia Shrine since 1970. He joined Toledo Rotary Club in 1978, serving as President in 1991-1992. R.C. was also a longtime supporter and board member for the South Toledo YMCA. Although bowling was his favorite sport, he golfed, played volleyball at the YMCA, earned a private pilot’s license as a young man and was an enthusiastic and experienced boater. His family and friends have many happy memories of boating trips including 4th of July cruises to watch the Toledo fireworks. Among his many hobbies, his greatest passion was the restoration of antique and classic cars including his favorite Chrysler convertibles from the late 30’s to the 50’s. R.C.’s restorations were meticulous, attempting to reproduce the factory condition and appearance of his cars with great success. He was a talented craftsman when working on any project.
After his retirement and Nancy’s retirement from Owens Illinois (although R.C. never really completely “retired”) they enjoyed travelling in the States, to Europe, and the Caribbean, as well as Australia and New Zealand. R.C. Nancy and Amy were longtime members of Park Congregational Church and subsequently the First Presbyterian Church of Maumee.
The family would like to express our gratitude to his many caregivers especially Connie, Nikki, Celina, Deb, and Peggy, as well as the staff at Story Point, for their care of R.C.
Services will be private for the family and close friends, including church friends. Anyone planning a memorial expression of sympathy might consider First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, 200 East Broadway, Maumee, Ohio 43537, Rotary Club of Toledo, or any charity of the donor’s choice.
