Robert S. Hoag, 88, of Maumee, Ohio passed away on March 18, 2012 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born on February 13, 1924 in Maywood, Illinois to Charles I and Grace C. Conger Hoag. In 1946 in Angola, Indiana he married Phyllis J. Snyder, and she survives. Robert was a Tool and Die maker for 49 years at Acklin Stamping, a division of Tecumseh Products, and a veteran of the United States Navy, where he served during WWII. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the IOOF. In 1953 Robert was one of twelve individuals that helped organize the founding of the Maumee Little League. Sadly, he was the last of the original twelve founders. Over the course of 58 years , Robert, or Grandpa Hoag as he is known to everyone was very active in the league, where he wore just about every hat and held almost every office except for President. He was still active on the board as an insurance agent and still active in the league meetings. Grandpa Hoag served as the leagues head umpire during the inaugural season. But after that season he would trade his umpire uniform in for a coaches uniform, where he would coach the Kiwanis Indians for the next 16 years. In 1994 the city honored him by naming the ball diamond on Ford St. the Robert S Hoag Field. Robert has also been honored with the 1973 Book of Golden Deeds award from the Maumee Exchange Club. In 1996 the Maumee Chamber of Commerce recognized Grandpa Hoag by presenting him with their Outstanding Citizen Award for his many years of dedicated service to the Maumee Little League Program. Robert second love was the Tennessee Lady Vols Basketball team. Surviving Robert is his wife of 65 years, Phyllis, sons, Robert Noreen, Ronald Vicky, and Richard Dianne Hoag, 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and sister Mary Jane Eding. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Charles, Lu, Steven, George, Orville, Jack, sisters Estelle and Grace, and grandson John Robert Hoag. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, Maumee, Ohio. Funeral services will be on Friday March 23, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Maumee United Methodist Church, 405 Sackett St. Maumee, Ohio 43537. Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery.
