Robert M. Ellis, Sr.

Robert Michael Ellis Sr., 94 of Toledo passed away Monday, February 06, 2012, at Swan Creek Retirement Village surrounded by his family. Robert was born on September 2, 1917 in Milton, Pennsylvania to Lloyd C. and Rebecca (Michael) Ellis. He married Ruth Janet Gray on January 14, 1944 in Toledo Ohio. Robert was a graduate of Bucknell University where he studied business. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII as a Lieutenant onboard the USS Olmstead where he was involved with landings on Guam, Luzan and the Philippines. Robert was employed as a Manager of Employee Benefits at Owens Illinois for over 30 years before retiring. He was a member of the Monroe Street United Methodist Church, the Barton Smith Masonic Lodge F. & A.M. No. 613 and a past member of the Rockwell Springs Trout Club of Castalia, Ohio. Robert loved fishing, was an avid reader and especially enjoyed historical non-fiction. Robert spent many treasured years in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ruth (Gray) Ellis; children, Linda B. (Terry) Dachenhaus, Robert M. (Judy) Ellis Jr., and Janet L. (Philip) Fortune; grandchildren, Laura (Jay) Hoffman, Chelsey Ellis, Lindsay Ellis, Molly (Chris) Kemper and Philip (Tracey) Fortune Jr. and five great-granddaughters. He is preceded in death by his parents. Friends and family will be received from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 11, 2012 in the Reed Chapel at Swan Creek Retirement Village, 5916 Cresthaven Lane, Toledo, Ohio, where funeral services will be held following the visitation at 11AM with Chaplain Bill Barnard officiating. Burial will be held privately at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s name to Monroe Street United Methodist Church, 3613 Monroe St, Toledo, Ohio 43606 and Swan Creek Retirement Village.
