Robert David Phillips, 72, a 42 year resident of Perrysburg, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at Parkcliffe Memory Care Community. He was born on October 15, 1945 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Thomas Brynmor and Ruth Phillips. He graduated from West Tech High School in Cleveland in 1963. Bob then went on to Bowling Green State University where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Education, a Masters in Special Education and a Specialist in Administration and Supervision. Bob spent most of his career in the Perrysburg Schools as a teacher, Director of Students, Assistant Principal and Principal. Over his 30 years of service, Bob enjoyed working with his high school students and impacted many lives. Bob married Carol A. Sherman on August 26, 1967 in Napoleon, Ohio and they just celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Bob retired in 1997, but continued to work for Perrysburg Schools and for the Wood County Juvenile Court for many years. If you knew Bob you would know that he loved his community and believed in giving back. He belonged to many professional/community organizations and received many honors and awards. He was active in the Exchange Club of Perrysburg, where he was awarded the Book of Golden Deeds; Perrysburg Schools Foundation; and co-chaired the Northern Wood County Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society for 10 years. Among the organizations where he volunteered are the American Red Cross/ Perrysburg High School Blood Drive, Perrysburg Park and Recreation Advisory, Perrysburg Symphony Board, Leadership Toledo and the Kip Boulis Foundation Trustee. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Bob was a runner and enjoyed playing racquetball. Over the years he enjoyed traveling to Europe and vacationing in Hilton Head with his family and friends. He loved to work in his yard and had a fondness for British and Welsh memorabilia. After his father passed away, Bob had a special friendship that only one could dream of with Carl Grob. Carl, was a “big brother” to Robert and they shared a father/son relationship. Along with his wife, Carol, Bob is survived by his daughters, Kimberly (Tim) Hansen and Krista (Jay) Walther; grandchildren, Evan and Ava Rantanen, Izzy, Graham, Reed, and Anderson Walther; step-grandchildren, Morganne, Andrew and Mallory Hansen; sister-in-law, Sharon Phillips, brothers-in-law, William and Terrence Sherman and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Thomas, “big brother” Carl Grob, mother and father-in-law, Donna and Richard Sherman, and sister-in-law, Peggy Sherman. Friends will be received Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 2-7 P.M. and Sunday, November 5, 2017 from 1-5 P.M. at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg, OH (419-874-3133). Funeral service and burial will be private. The family would like to thank the staff at Parkcliffe and dear friend, Rachel Weber, for their compassionate care and companionship.
