Robert James Conroy, Sr., age 83, of Toledo, passed away at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on August 19, 2008. He was a respected educator and coach. Robert was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 4, 1925 to James and Jean Conroy. After serving in the Navy, Bob moved to Ohio to attend Bowling Green State University and received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education, and was member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He started his teaching and coaching careers at Archbold High School. He later coached basketball, track, and cross-country at Whitmer High School. Robert then spent several years in California teaching and coaching before returning to Toledo to be the assistant basketball coach at the University of Toledo. Bob had a long and distinguished career in education and coaching. His players had great respect for him and always considered him as their mentor. His hobbies included flying, sailing, and physical fitness. He is survived by the mother of his children, Phyllis Wendel Conroy; daughter, Patricia Cary Weaver; son, Robert, Jr. Deborah; grandchildren, Patrick Conroy, Kevin Leigh-Anne Conroy, and Craig, Chad, & Christopher Weaver; brother, Raymond; sister, Jean St. Nicholas; special nephew, Christopher Maureen Conroy; and former wife, Loraine Conroy. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James Conroy and brother, Donald Conroy. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008 from 4 to 8 pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd.. A Memorial service will be held on Friday at 11 am at Christ Presbyterian Church, 4225 W. Sylvania. Ave. Roberts family wishes to thank the staff at Parkcliffe Community for three years of love and support and Hospice for taking care of him during his final days.
