Robert Campbell Smith, Jr. “Cam” age 84 of Maumee passed away on Christmas Eve Friday December 24, 2021 at Ebeid Hospice, Sylvania. He was born September 7, 1937 in Muskegon, Michigan to Robert Campbell and Louie Margaret (Galpin) Smith, Sr. Cam was the oldest of four children. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1955 and briefly attended Ohio University before starting a family of his own. Cam, like his Father was involved in the steel industry all the way up to his passing. Cam founded Doral Steel in 1975, headquartered in Toledo and he also had operations in Clinton, TN and Monterrey, MX. He was honored as the 1993 Entrepreneur of the Year for Michigan/Northwest Ohio and the 2007 Steel Man of the Year from the Association of Steel Distributors. An avid golfer, Cam was a member locally of Heatherdowns Country Club, Inverness Club, Stone Oak Country Club and also The Club at Quail Ridge and Delray Dunes Golf Club both in Boynton Beach, FL. Cam had 4 “hole in ones,” 3 of which were at Heatherdowns on the 7th hole. He was also fortunate enough to play at the famed St. Andrews Golf Club of Scotland with his son. Cam also enjoyed firearms and shooting guns with friends as he was also a member of the Detroit Gun Club and the Adams Conservation Club. Successful yet humble, he was almost generous to a fault as he always thought of others first. Cam was extremely proud of his 49 years of sobriety as a member of AA. Cam always took pride in being the best dressed in the room, he also enjoyed shopping, Jazz, playing drums, exotic cars, jewelry, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Jan’s Hot Dogs, doughnuts, fudge, popcorn with extra butter at the movies and especially a cold Diet Coke ! Two of his favorite sayings in certain situations were “what a revolting situation” and “the old Smith luck. He never wanted to be the center of attention or to admit to his exceptional people skills he would simply say he was just lucky, we all know otherwise. Cam was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lance Hunter Smith. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Jo Ann Smith; brother Roderick Galpin (Jeannine) Smith; sister Heather Smith (Frank) Jozsa; daughter Hunter Smith Eichhorn; son Cam (Penny) Smith; step-children, Joy (Edward) Perozek, Mary Hunt and Lisa (Scott) Hughes. Of all the titles Cam had through his life, the most cherished was being “Papa” to the following survivors, grandchildren, Chase Campbell (Cassie) Eichhorn, R. Campbell Smith IV, Spencer Thorn Smith, Preston Teaghen Smith, Alexis Wingate (Jason) Christie, Steven Dale Wingate, Erica Lee Wingate, James Michael and Elizabeth Erin Shinners, Grace, Charles and Mia Hughes, Edward, John, Ana and Liza Perozek and Gordon and Jude Hunt; great-grandchildren Shaylin Smith, Taitum and Chyler Sorenson and Kali Rae and Lucas Ian Christie; nieces Kimberly Kaye Owen and Ashley Anne Shoffer. Friends will be received to celebrate his accomplished life and his untimely passing at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 from 2:00-8:00 PM where funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 5 at 11 AM. Interment will be private at Joy Cemetery in Ottawa Hills, OH. For donations Cam’s favorite local charity is The Open Door Ministry, 2823 Cherry Street, Toledo, OH 43608. Charities of your choosing are also greatly accepted as Cam always asked what he could do for others less fortunate than him.
