Robert “Bob” Snell, 88, of Perrysburg, Ohio passed away peacefully February 2, 2023, in the care of family and Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Bob had so many endearing qualities, but his resilience, compassion, and willingness to listen were defining characteristics.
Born in Highland Park, MI on April 5, 1934, to Sam and Violet Snell, Bob was the youngest of 5 children. After high school Bob went into the armed services. He did a tour in Europe before attending college via the “GI Bill.” After graduation Bob eventually joined the Oakland County Police Force where he rose to become Chief of Police during the era of the Jimmy Hoffa investigation.
While still serving as Oakland Chief of Police Bob was diagnosed with “Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuritis” (rare neuropathy leading to eventual paralysis). While the neuropathy would be Bob’s greatest life challenge, through it he inspired everyone who knew him. To Bob, every day was a gift. He lived that philosophy. Even as his physical condition deteriorated over the years, he had a remarkable ability to lean into the positive and never wanted his condition to be burdensome to the people in his life.
Bob had many passions, but he relished time spent with family most of all. Whether it was bringing donuts over on Sunday morning, conversation over a McDonald’s Big Breakfast or just a quick check-in during the day, he was always interested, thoughtful, and caring in his communication. A conversation with Bob usually included good perspective, sharp wit, and a healthy dose of (typically dry) humor.
Bob was beloved by everyone he engaged with and attracted many special people into his life. He was blessed with two special caretakers in his last decade, Cathy and Sarah, who became like family.
Bob is survived by his daughter Susan Snell; grandchildren Milo (Megan) Roberts, Mileena (Jared) Welty, Drew (Mary) Snell, Maria (Alex) Ditullio, Lia (John) Rivalsky, Jay (Kylie) Snell, Alana Edmunds, Crystal (Erik) Kotowski-Edmunds and Sean Edmunds; and great-grandchildren Ellie Roberts, Adelaide Rivalsky and Noah Snell. He was preceded in death by his son David Snell and granddaughter Robin Snell.
A private celebration of life will be held with close family and friends in the near term. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio, The Waterford at Levis Commons and the many friends who have reached out in remembrance and support.
