Robert F. Binkley, M.D.

Robert F. “Bob” Binkley, M.D., age 89, passed away peacefully on August 4th in Jackson, MI. Bob was born in Toledo on September 30, 1925 to Samuel and Margaret Binkley. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1943, enlisted in the army and was a decorated veteran serving with the 100th Division, which saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. He utilized the GI bill and graduated from the University of Toledo in 1948, then attended St. Louis University School of Medicine, graduating in 1952. After his residency in Cleveland, he practiced anesthesia primarily at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and was a founding member of the Associated Anesthesiologists of Toledo, retiring in 1995. He developed the respiratory therapy program at St. Vincent in the late 1960’s and for many years was a professor in the St. Vincent’s nurse anesthetist program. He enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling and sports. Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virginia (Sohnly) Binkley; siblings, Bernice Peugeot, Foster Binkley, Howard Binkley and William Binkley. Surviving are his children, Robert and Lois Binkley of Waxhaw, NC; Karen and Terry Taylor of Somerset, MI; Susan and Jeff Fay of Jamestown, NC; David and Merry Jo Binkley of Ft. Pierce, FL and Claudia and Darren Clark of Raeford, NC. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, Lauren (Peter) Gajdek, Christopher Selleck, Kevin (Sarah) Fay, Beth (Josh) Mockensturm, Gretchen Selleck, Douglas (Amanda) Fay, Hannah (Mark) Buehler, Ellen Fay, Carrie Fay, Mark Fay, Timothy Taylor and Jessica Taylor, as well as two great grandchildren, Isabelle and Shoshana. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Lyne McIlhargey for her warmth and friendship throughout the years. They would also like to thank the wonderful staff at CareLink of Jackson, MI. Visitation will be Friday from 2:00-6:00 PM at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.). Services will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday at Walker, followed by internment at Resurrection Cemetery, 5725 Hill Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to the organization of choice.
