Robert Paul Beyer, age 89, of Arroyo Grande, California, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2008. Robert, long time proprietor and former business owner of Beyers Bakery in Toledo, moved to California in 1976. Bob was a master cake decorator and baker for 82 years when he first began working with his father, Paul Beyer, who emigrated from Germany and founded Beyers Bakery in 1922, first on Vinyl Street and later on Starr Avenue in Toledo. Later the two of them operated several branch bakeries in Point Place, Rossford and Oregon, Ohio. Bob won many national first place awards for his decorating skills and Beyers Bakery became well know in the region for its excellent German baked goods and specialty birthday and wedding cakes. Bob built and operated the first concession stand at Mollenkoph Stadium in the 1950s when he said the fans need to have a place to get a cup of coffee and a hotdog and where he sold baked goods as well. During football season Bob got no sleep on Friday nights where hed run the concession, with help from family and close friends and then returned to the bakery working until the next morning. Bobs strong work ethic will remain in the minds of all who knew and loved him. After moving to California he rejected retirement and worked in several bakeries throughout California, before finding his bakery home with Carlocks Bakery in Los Osos, California, where he is credited for its success from many of the trademark Beyers German baked goods. Bob worked for Carlocks until last October, short of his goal of working until age 90. Bob loved to travel by car and he made friends easily wherever he went. He had a baker friend in every city he visited, sharing recipes, teaching and instructing. The highlight of all travels was his annual driving trip from California to Ohio to visit with family and his friend Val. In Ohio Bob was a Mason with Lotus Lodge No. 625, F. & A.M., Scottish Rite, 32 Zenobia Shriners and a Charter member of the Zenobia Shriners and a Charter member of the Zenobia Shriners Mounted Patrol. Bob was also a former member of the East Toledo Club and Eastminister Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister Dorothy Skaff, brother-in-law Donald Ludwig, soul mate Valeria Kelmz and former wife Mary Beyer. He is survived by daughters, Carolyn Sayen Tom of Monclova, Ohio and Norma Bohland, grandchildren, Stephen Bohland, Dawn Benschoter Mark and David Sayen, four great-grandchildren, sister Marjorie Ludwig of Riverside, California , several nieces, nephews and cousins in Massachusetts, California and Ohio. Friends and former employees may gather Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 10:30 am followed by a memorial service in celebration of Roberts life at 11:30 a.m. in the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio. Final resting place is Toledo Memorial Park. Memorials may take the form of a donation to a charity of the donors choice. For all, find comfort by carrying him in your heart and soul. Know he will be working hard now by Gods side. www.walkerfuneralhomes.com
