Robert H. Baldwin, Sr., 96, of Sunset Village, Sylvania, Ohio, passed away on March 24, 2012. Bob was born in the Panama Canal Zone on July 14, 1915 where his father was engineer-in-charge of construction of the Miraflores Locks of the canal. As a boy, Bob lived with his family in Chile, S.A. and numerous other places in Michigan, Kansas, and New York where his father built large projects. After graduation from the University of Michigan in 1937 with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Bob married Marilynn Meme Manning on February 26, 1944 and remained her devoted husband for 68 years. Bob served as editor of Chemical Week magazine, research engineer for the DuPont Company in Wilmington, DE, Director of Research for the Maumee Chemical Company in Toledo, and retired in 1977 as Director of Research for the Chemical Division of the Sherwin Williams Company in Cleveland Solon. During the second world war while doing chemical research for DuPont, Bob collaborated on the design of a chemical process concept which became the Maumee Chemical Company in Toledo immediately after the war. While with DuPont the family lived in Chadds Ford, PA where Bob was a school board member and served his local parish as teacher, choir member and Presbyter. Following retirement in Solon, OH, Bobs hobbies included maple syrup and apple cider production with local neighbors, constantly engineering improved processes and product. Always an avid gardener, Bob raised vegetables as well as fruit wherever he lived. After becoming familiar with the writings of Francis Schaeffer, Bob became a board member for a time with the Francis A. Schaeffer Foundation. Bob was an actively witnessing Christian; a true, good, and faithful servant. Bob is survived by his wife, Marilynn; four children: John Barbara, Nancy Hemminger, Robert Jr. Cathie, and Emily McPhie Winston; seven grandchildren: Matthew Naomi, Elizabeth Baldwin; Glenn Hemminger Jodi, Jill Balderson Beau, and Kyle Hemminger Kara; Miriam McPhie, and Cameron McPhie; as well as seven great-grandchildren. Bob is also survived by his sister, Harriet Lakin and preceded in death by his brother, Don who passed away March 3, 2012. The family wishes the staff of the Sunset Community to know of their heartfelt gratitude for the care and treatment of Dad in his last days.
