Robert S. Atkinson

Robert S. Atkinson, 87, of Toledo passed away Thursday, November 19, 2009 in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg after a brief illness. He was born May 22, 1922 in Pataskala, Ohio to Carleton C. and Evelyn Farber Atkinson. Educated for two years at Wooster College and then the Ohio State University, he received his Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering. Robert spent his entire forty-one year career in various engineering and staff positions with Owens Corning Fiberglass in Ashton, RI; Newark, OH; and New York City, NY. From 1966 until his retirement in 1986, he was the Medical Administrator for the company. Bob also served as a deacon and later elder at First Presbyterian Church in White Plains, NY, and Maumee, OH. Bob enjoyed traveling to Sanibel Island and served six years as treasurer and board member of the Island Inn Company. Hobbies included skiing, sailing, swimming, birding, shelling, photography, and genealogy. He was a member of many genealogy and nature societies and volunteered his time with Boy Scouts of America and most recently at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The widower of Virginia Chaplin Atkinson who passed away April 5, 1996; Robert is survived by his brother, Richard George Atkinson; sister-in-law, Ann Atkinson; brother-in-law, Dr. Hugh Chaplin and the Chaplin and Atkinson nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on December 6, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church in Maumee.
