Robert J. Appleyard, 87, of Port Clinton, OH, passed away, Tuesday, August 04, 2015 at his residence, 3764 N. Stonehenge, Port Clinton, OH. He was born, and attended schools in Ogdensburg, New York, and graduated from Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, New York, with a bachelor degree of chemical engineering. An employee of the United Gypsum Co., for 37 years, his entire career was in manufacturing, having worked in Oakfield, NY, Baltimore, MD, New York City and as the plant manager in Jersey City, NJ and Gypsum, OH. Robert retired from the Gypsum plant in July, 1987. He served in the Korean War in 1951-1952, as a platoon leader in the 11th Engineer Combat Battalion, 55th Engineer Treadway Bridge Co., and the 522nd Armored Engineer Co. Survivors include: Wife: Martha J. Appleyard to whom he was married for 62 years; Son: Jay Appleyard of Port Clinton; Grandchildren: Gina Eversole of Florence, KY, Claire Godlewski of North Ridgeville, OH and Erica Eversole of Maumee, OH; Great-Grandson: Jacob R. Godlewski of North Ridgeville, OH. Robert was preceded in death by his parents: Albert and Matha Appleyard; brother: William J. Appleyard, son: John A. Appleyard and daughters: Elizabeth M. Appleyard-Olalde and Linda M. Appleyard, grandchildren: Robert II and Tracey Appleyard. All services will be private. Memorial donations in memory of Robert may be given to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870. Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory assisted the family with arrangements.
