Richard J Turner died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at Ebeid Hospice, Sylvania, Ohio.
Dick was born on July 5, 1939, in Cheektowaga, New York to Roland and Evelyn Turner.
Their family moved to the Toledo area when his dad was transferred to the new Chevrolet transmission plant in Toledo. Dick then graduated from the former Burnham High School in Sylvania. Having moved his senior year in high school, Dick began volunteering at Whitmer Athletic Department in various capacities. Through his years of dedication and support of Whitmer Athletics and Washington Local Schools, he was inducted into the Whitmer Sports Hall of Fame in October of 2003.
In the winter of 1975, Dick purchased a cottage at Lake George, Clare, Michigan, which became the hub of vacations and holidays for the entire family, extended family, and friends. It was also used for the Whitmer cross country team for summer work outs and team building.
Dick began his career in the electrical industry as a salesman for Leffler Electric moving to Westinghouse Supply and eventually as a manufactures rep for Riffle and Associates, retiring in 2015. He also served in the Army National Guard for 7 years.
Besides being in the Whitmer Sports Hall of Fame, Dick served as a member of the Washington Local School Board, The Whitmer Athletic Board, Toledo Electrical Board of Control and was a member of the Ohio Michigan Electrical Contractors Association.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Evelyn Turner, and his “fur babies”, Chadder, Buddy, and Max.
He is survived by his sisters Barbara (Lyman) Phillips, Naples, Florida, Diane (William) Hughes, Defiance, Ohio, and Brother Donald (Judy) Turner, Angola, Indiana; along with nieces and nephews, Kim Phillips (Jeff Flynn), Andrea (Paul) Peach, Daria (Rob) Moss, Kent (Barbara) Hughes, Kari (Mike) Frindt, Kristen (Scott) Saner, Chad Turner, and Tiffany (Will) Turner-Baldwin; 22 great nieces and nephews and 1 great nephew.
Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
A public visitation will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2022, from 4-6 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 West Sylvania Ave., Toledo. A scripture service will follow at 6 p.m.
