Richard “Rick” Louis Smith, Jr., 73, passed away peacefully with his loving wife by his side on Tuesday, May 17, 2022. Rick was born on April 8, 1949 in Sylvania, Ohio. He was raised by his mother, Catherine (Hasapes) Smith Lloyd, and step-father, Hank Lloyd alongside his 3 siblings and stepbrother. Rick went on to meet Ann (Trabbic) Smith, the love of his life and wife of 23 years, where they married in Nashville, Tennessee on July 17, 1998.
Rick attended Sylvania High School and graduated in 1967. He began his career working for the Sylvania Schools where he met his wife and tended to the grounds and maintenance. He was a dedicated and loyal worker who retired from Sylvania Schools after a 30 year-long career. Rick had many hobbies including his love to play the guitar. In high school, he had a band called the “Henchmen”. He was a huge fan of the New York Yankees and loved Nascar Racing. He drove “Figure 8” stock cars and would race at the Toledo Speedway and Flat Rock Speedway in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He was the crew chief and owner of his son Cory’s Go-Kart team, where his son affectionately called him by his special nickname, “Guido”. His favorite foods were all-things-sweet but he had a soft spot for jelly beans and orange slices.
Rick was the kindest and most understanding individual. He had quite a softspoken demeanor and was never quick to anger. He had an extremely determined will which always kept him motivated to fight against his Parkinson’s Disease, which he did for over 20 years of his life. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather who will be missed dearly. His steady personality and strong will are among the many traits that his family will miss the most.
