Rick Nudd passed away on July 26, 2022, surrounded by his loved ones, who will continue to honor his legacy by living their life to the fullest.
Rick was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 2, 1968. He grew up in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where he made his first life-long friends. Rick didn’t believe in having just one career, but his first was an electrician working with his childhood best friend. In 1988, he began dating the love of his life, Alison, whom he married in 1995 in Atlanta, Georgia. During that time, you would find Rick playing guitar, training his dog Casey, or hanging out with his long-time friends from Stone Mountain High School.
When Rick and Alison moved to Thomasville, Georgia in 1999, he followed a passion he developed with his first dog Casey and began his second career training hunting dogs. With the help of an amazing mentor, he started his own business (White Oak Kennels). Because Rick never did anything half-way, he poured his heart and soul into every dog that came through his kennels.
On February 24, 2006, Rick and Alison’s life changed forever when their daughter Colleen Elizabeth was born. His love for Colleen led Rick to his third (and final) career. When she was a toddler, he went back to college to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. Rick attended Thomas University, while also caring for Colleen when Alison was at work. You would often find them together in downtown Thomasville at the bookstore or the coffee shop or at any of the numerous shops on Broad Street.
Rick graduated with his teaching degree in 2012. By this time, Alison’s work had led them to Rome, Georgia and his first teaching job was at Darlington School where Colleen was attending third grade. In Rome, Rick learned to love cycling and made lifelong friends on his mountain bike exploring North Georgia and Tennessee.
Rick’s next and final home was in Toledo, Ohio. The weather in Toledo was a brutal adjustment for such an “outdoorsy” guy. But as always, he adapted by finding new friends and developing new hobbies. His search for new friends who loved cycling (and drinking beer) as much as he did, led him to the Maumee Valley Wheelmen. The Wheelmen quickly adopted this outspoken guy from “the South”, and he once again made lifelong friends.
Also in Toledo, Rick began teaching at Saint Rose where Colleen attended school. Rick would have filled any need the school had, as long as they gave him students to teach and tell “dad jokes” to. He was a substitute teacher, a middle school literature teacher, a Kindergarten teacher, and finally a middle school science teacher. As with everywhere he went, he made incredibly close friendships with his coworkers at Saint Rose. Rick loved his students with a passion that could not be measured (or contained). While his no-nonsense approach was not always met with enthusiasm from parents, Rick believed his students were capable of anything they put their mind to, and he pushed them to be their best. He talked about his students constantly and he kept up with everything they did after moving on from his classroom. He was so very proud of all of them.
Rick was what they call “larger than life” and everywhere he went he made lasting friendships. He loved to cook, and entertain, and make people laugh, and so his and Alison’s home was always a gathering place for friends. At the forefront of every decision in Rick’s life, was his love for Colleen. He took her fishing, he taught her to ride, they went camping together, he “tried” to teach her how to play guitar. The list of things they did together could go on for pages. He would have done anything for her, and she will miss him every single day of her life.
Rick is survived by his wife, Alison and their beloved daughter Colleen; his mother and father, Edward and Elizabeth Nudd; his brothers Eddie (Grace) Nudd and Michael (Aimee) Nudd; his nephew and niece, William Nudd and Natalie Nudd; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janifer Scanlon and Patrick Scanlon; his mother-in-law and step mother-in-law, Joyce Scanlon and Laura Scanlon; his aunt Cathy (Mike) Volk; his cousins, Stacey (Chris) Monks, Sean Tauber, and Katie (Trey) Peacocke; the Wheelmen of Toledo, Ohio; and many, many, friends and family in Ohio, Georgia and Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Patrick Scanlon; and his grandparents Edward and Catherine Nudd and Charles and Elizabeth Cadwell.
