Richard Mockensturm

February 2, 1937 — December 24, 2024

Richard Anthony “Dick” Mockensturm died peacefully in his home around midnight, December 24, 2024. He was 87 years old. Rita (Kidder), his wife of 66 years, was by his side until the end.

He was born to Clement and Eleanora (Rohrbach) Mockensturm on February 2, 1937, at Riverside Hospital in North Toledo. The second youngest of four boys and two girls, Dick went to St. Michael the Archangel on Sandusky Street where he and his brothers also served mass nearly every week.

Dick graduated from Macomber high school and immediately went into the printing trade. He started on a small press in the Owens-Corning print shop and stayed with the company until his retirement 42 years later. A natural leader, Dick would eventually become supervisor, mentoring many young tradesmen and sharing his deep experience in the shop.

Also, during that time, Dick was instrumental in the formation and stewardship of the Toledo Club of the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen. In his decades of service to the printing industry and trade, Dick forged countless close friendships that would last a lifetime. Dick and Rita were married at St. Michael’s on May 3, 1958. They moved into a small house on Ontario street and started a family. Through his entire life, Dick was happiest when he and Rita and his two boys: Steve and Dave were all in the same place. He was a family man through and through.

Later in life, Dick and Rita traveled the world together: Bermuda, Costa Rica, Scotland, Hawaii, Alaska and more. They cruised the Panama Canal twice. In many cases, these were dreams come true.

Though faced with seemingly insurmountable adversities, Dick found strength, resilience and an abundant life of recovery through his family, friends, sponsors and God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Theresa, John, Ray, Susie, Phil and Vince. He is survived by his wife Rita, sons Stephen (Dorothy) and David (Cookie), grandsons Alex and Matthew (Theresa), granddaughters Lily (AJ) Hohenbrink and Chloe (James) Crowther, numerous nieces and nephews and great-grandson Jaxon Richard Hohenbrink.

The family is extremely grateful to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Good Grief of Northwest Ohio and lifelong friend, Janet Johnson, for their love, care and support.
