Richard (Rich) Scott MacMillan passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23rd, 2026. He was 71 years old. He was born on August 22nd, 1955 in Columbus, OH. Rich is survived by his wife Laura (Rotondo) MacMillan, three children: Jim, Amy and Kelly, and son-in-law Josh. Rich was married to his loving wife Laura for 42 years. His wife, children, and extended family were most important to him. Rich was a devoted son to Don and Ann MacMillan, as well as brother to his dear younger sister Jeanne Sprague.
Rich attended Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and also was a proud member of the Purdue Marching Band. Thereafter, he continued his education at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and earned a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1980. Since that time, Rich practiced intellectual property law in the Toledo Area and was a co-founder of the law firm of MacMillan, Sobanski and Todd.
As a long-time resident of Sylvania, OH, Rich was an active member of numerous Toledo area professional and volunteer causes and organizations. Rich has served as president of both the Toledo Bar Association and the Toledo Intellectual Property Law Association. Rich acted as a mediator in several Toledo area legal organizations and taught law classes at University of Toledo. Rich was President of the Board of Directors of Lott Industries, a local nonprofit organization which provides opportunities for people with disabilities.
Rich loved music and taught himself how to play the banjo and harmonica in his spare time. He was an avid college sports fan. Since 1973, Rich treasured his Thursday nights with many friends where they would gather at J&G's Pizza Parlor in Sylvania. Rich also loved traveling especially with his family and close friends. He loved getting together with his family every year to celebrate Thanksgiving, his favorite holiday.
A celebration of life for Rich will be held at a later date. Rich's wife, kids, sister, cousins, friends and extended family love him dearly and miss him very much. Donations in Rich's name can be made either to The American Cancer Society, the Ability Center of Greater Toledo, or Lott Industries.
