Richard M. Krill

Richard M. Krill, age 72, died Saturday, January 15, 2011 at the Sunset House in Toledo, OH with his wife and three children at his side. Dick was born March 29, 1938 in Akron, OH to Dr. Carl and Helen Krill. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH and his Ph.D. from St. Louis University in St. Louis, MO. Dick was passionate about ancient Greece and Rome and began his teaching career as an Instructor in Classics at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY in 1963. He moved to Columbia, MO in 1965 where he was Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Missouri until 1968 when he joined the University of Toledo as Professor of Classics and Humanities. Dick retired from the University of Toledo in 1999 after more than 30 years of teaching and was also Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages. After retiring from the University, he taught Latin at both St. Ursula Academy Toledo and St. Johns High School Toledo for a number of years. During his distinguished career, Dick authored multiple books and articles that were featured in various professional newsletters and journals. His involvement with professional organizations included serving as vice-president of the Archaeological Institute of America Toledo Society from 1968-75, and president from 1975-76 and 1978-79; Chairman of the Scholarship Committee for study of Athens and Rome of Eta Sigma Phi Nations Classics Honorary, 1966-70; and member of Phi Kappa Phi National General Honorary Toledo chapter from 1974-present. He was very active with the Ohio Classical Conference Association of University and High School Teachers of Latin serving as secretary/treasurer from 1968-1970; vice president, 1970-71; president 1971-72; Hildesheim Vase Committee for recognizing excellence among high school teachers in Ohio from 1977-78; executive council 1972-75, 1984-86; Teacher Certification Standards Review Committee, 1983-85; and Nominations Committee 1985-present. Dick received various travel and equipment grants which assisted him in his research and studies including a significant grant from the Ohio Board of Regents for specialized computers and equipment to the University of Toledo Department of Foreign Languages. Dick is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Louise Krill; daughters, Gina Matt Carter, Michelle Eric Morris, and Mimi Dave Nichols; grandchildren, Justin and Austin Carter; Katie, David, Hannah, Stephen, Leah, Sarah and Lily Morris; and Julia, Ethan, and Andrew Nichols; brothers, Carl Pat Krill, M.D., Joseph Sandy Krill, and Kevin Mary Lynne Krill; sisters, Mary Sawan Gene Sawan, M.D. and Roberta Robert Hawkins; brother-in-law, Frank Mary Kay Danckaert; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his son, John Thomas Krill; and sister, Kathleen Danckaert. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 23, 2011 from 2-8:00 pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. where funeral services will begin on Monday with prayers at 9:30 am followed by a 11:00 am Funeral Mass at Gesu Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd. Toledo, OH.
