Dick passed away with family present the morning of December 20, 2017. He was a young 85, and lived life to the fullest. He was a friend to all and was the one who called, arranged, and brought people together. He was a graduate of Libbey High School and the University of Toledo. He received his diploma from “TU” by going to night school while working full time with 3 young children at home. He was a veteran of the Korean war, and served overseas. He made a house a home, and was the beloved husband of Patricia (Mackiewicz), proud father of 5 children, Pam (Jeff) Kreft, Craig, Chris (Mary), Eric John (Becky), and Matt (Kim) Cheney and 10 grandchildren. And we must not forget to mention his “family” at the Bob Evans Restaurant on Reynolds and Heatherdowns where he could be frequently seen at the snack bar with coffee and a biscuit. Dick began his full time working career as an engineer at Toledo Stamping. He was then asked to interview for a job at Fulton Industries in Wauseon, OH, where he worked for several decades eventually becoming part owner and President. He retired in 1989. During his working years, after working a 9 hour day and a 1.5 hour commute, he always made time to actively play with his 5 children. There was dodgeball in front of the house, tennis at the park, card games, and board games. He and Pat always attended musical and sporting events the kids were involved in. He was a hands-on fix it man when it came to his home and vehicles. He had a thirst to learn and was always reading and trying to find better ways to do things. He taught by example. Pat and Dick loved to travel and some of their favorite destinations with friends and family were Miley’s Lodge, Chicago, Oglebay, Cape Cod, and Lancaster, OH. Dick had an opportunity to visit Germany in 1975 with a friend who was born there. He loved and was playing golf twice weekly up until July of this year. He was an avid card player - euchre, pinochle, hearts, 99, golf, and poker to name a few. He played piano and loved music, all kinds, especially classical. He and wife Pat were Toledo Symphony orchestra ticket holders for over 60 years. He also enjoyed the Toledo Jazz orchestra. The rock song “Freebird” was a favorite and described him and his way of life. This love of music was passed on to his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Craig just 4 months ago, and parents Helen (Furry) and Leo Cheney. The family wishes to thank all of our family and friends who helped during this difficult time with their time, visits, moral support, and gifts from the kitchen. Also, many thanks to all the very special people at Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their unwavering care and support. Visitation will be Thursday 12/28/17 from 2-8 pm at the Walker Funeral Home 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be private.
