Richard "Rick" Carter passed away peacefully at his home in the early hours of Thursday, August 20, 2026, at the age of 81.
Born May 15, 1945, to Henrietta and Alva Carter. Rick grew up in Maumee, Ohio. In 1964, Rick met the love of his life, Sandie Roe of Sylvania, and married. Shortly after, Rick was drafted into the US Army where he served during the Vietnam War. Their first son was born during his time serving our country. When he returned home, he and Sandie welcomed two more children. Rick earned his business and engineering degrees and spent his career as a Mechanical Engineer. As the kids grew into their teenage years, hockey took over - Rick and Sandie spent countless hours at the rink, and Rick rarely missed a game if he could help it.
Rick loved gardening, puzzles, and brain teasers, but fishing held a special place in his heart. Nothing made him happier than watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren fish alongside him, and enjoy their hobbies and sports.
He served several years on the board of S.M.A.H.L Hockey at Tam-O-Shanter along with being the videographer of several local high school teams. He belonged to Conn-Weissenberger American Legion Post #587 and was a life member at VFW 2898.
Rick was preceded in death by his son, Rob, and sisters, Carol, Ruth, and Dot. Survived by his wife of 59 ½ years, Sandie; daughter-in-law, Cat Carter; daughter, Kristen (Bruce) Lyell; and son, Jeremy (Cristen) Carter; grandchildren, Nick Carter, Kyle (Megan) Carter, Alex (Chelsea) Lyell, Josh Carter, Chelsea Lyell, Nate (Nikki) Carter, Andrew Carter and Alyson Carter; great-grandchildre, Ezra, Eleanor, Lilly, and Sophia Carter, who lovingly called him "2-Pa". He is also survived by his brother, Ed Carter; and Sisters Helen Snyder and Mable Siefert; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.
The family is deeply grateful to the nurses on the 6th floor of Toledo Hospital and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their care and compassion they showed Rick in his final days.
Visitation will be at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave, Toledo, on Monday, August 24, 2026, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a funeral service and military honors beginning at 6 p.m.
