Read Skip Wilcox, 79, of Perrysburg Ohio, died at his home on Monday, May 2, after a recent struggle with cancer. He was born on September 14, 1931 in Ithaca, New York. He spent his younger years sailing competitively on the Finger Lakes of New York State where he earned his nickname Skipper at the Ithaca Yacht Club. He graduated from Manlius Military Academy, attended Cornell University and was a lifelong member of Alpha Delta Phi. Skip was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War. He joined his Father, Harold Wilcox, as owner and operator of the Atwaters grocery store in Ithaca, and later opened a second location in the West End area. Skip was active in the Ithaca Chamber of commerce, Independent Grocers lecturer at Cornell University, and was named a lifelong member of the Ithaca volunteer firefighters association. More recently he worked for Spartan Chemical as a divisional sales manager and later owned Ferguson Supply Company in Holland, Ohio. Skip was also a Man-2-Man counselor for prostate cancer and was the president of the Regional NACM. He spent his recent years, sailing the Caribbean and traveling to Europe. His favorite destinations were Santiago, Cuba and the Kasbah in Morocco. He was a long time member of the Maumee River Yacht Club. He is survived by his wife Marygrace Miller Wilcox, and children Michael Jan Wilcox, Linda Wilcox, Mary Sam Padgett, Marcia Bobby Suggs Brandon , Julie Barry Waller, and Joel Lisa Miller. Grandchildren; Kate Billy Dempsey, Benjamin Wilcox, Renee Padgett, Joel Hollie Storie Wilcox, Sarah Wilcox, Michaela Padgett, Matthew Brandon, Kimberly Padgett, Kisa Bigelow and Chad Baranski. Great-grandsons; Rush Logan Dempsey, and Andrew James Baranski. Sibling; Natalee Roger Wilder. and niece Marcia Wilder Dehond. Special in laws include Pauline Tony Wallace, Christine Ronald Martens, George Beth Chovanec, Mark Carol Chovanec, Patricia Ron Wilson, Joe Sue Chovanec, Stephen Jen Chovanec, Tim Amy Chovanec, Nancy Chovanec, Susie Bob Dick. Special friends include; Tom Jardine, Greg Tumey, and Ray Claremont He is predeceased by his wives Marian Burns Wilcox, Beryl Udall Wilcox and his nephew Mark Read Wilder. Visitation hours will be from 3pm-8pm on Friday, May 6, 2011 at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home at 501 Conant Street, Maumee, OH 43537. Services will be held at St. Timothys Episcopal Church, 871 East Boundary Road, Perrysburg Ohio on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 11am. A Luncheon will follow at the church.
