In Loving Memory of Raul Cantu
October 29, 1940 – June 28, 2025
Raul Cantu passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, in the compassionate care of Hospice of Northwest Ohio after a six-year residency at Genoa Care Center. He was 84.
Born in McAllen, Texas, Raul “Running Bear” built a life grounded in love, perseverance, and quiet strength. In 1964, he married his beloved “White Dove”, Patricia Strause, and together they made their home in Genoa, Ohio. Their 61-year journey together was filled with devotion, laughter, and the joy of raising a large and loving family.
Raul wore many hats throughout his life—factory worker, farmer, and proud owner of Patricia Cantu Trucking, which he operated for over sixteen years, hauling steel and other goods with determination and integrity.
A man of many talents, Raul had a deep passion for working with his hands. He was an expert welder, a skilled engine builder, and a home improvement enthusiast. He built his children’s bicycles and riding lawn mowers and took immense pride in maintaining a perfectly manicured lawn. His kids would say he could build or fix anything.
Raul found joy in simple pleasures: fishing, gardening, playing volleyball or basketball with his kids, a good game of euchre, and an avid Ohio State fan. He especially loved cookouts—surrounded by friends, family, laughter, and of grilled food, Raul was in his element.
He led by example, teaching his children the value of hard work and resilience. A generous friend and loving grandpa, he leaves behind a legacy of kindness and resourcefulness that will live on for generations.
Raul is survived by his devoted wife Patricia; six children: Raul (Becky) Cantu, Robert (Sherrie) Cantu, Rebecca Cantu, Angela (Chad) LaPlante, Francisca Cantu, and Ramona Cantu; grandchildren: Joshua, Morgan, Alaina, Becca, Andrew, Griffin, Allen, and Aiden; three great-grandchildren; and sisters: Rosa Cantu and Josie Sanchez. He was preceded in death by his sons Allen and Ramon; parents, Magdelano and Frances; brothers, Ruben, Richard, and Ramon; and sister Mary Garza.
Raul’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Genoa Care Center and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their compassionate care.
Any donations can be made to the Raul Cantu Memorial Fund care of Patricia Cantu.
