Randy Scott Hall, 46, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 13, 2025. Born and raised in Sylvania, Randy was the beloved son of David Sr. and the late Brenda Hall, who preceded him in death in December.
Randy spent his entire life in the same Sylvania home where he grew up, eventually purchasing it from his father to raise a family of his own. In his late teens, he began a loving relationship with Matasha Storey, a bond that grew over nearly 30 years. Together, they built a life full of love and laughter, raising four sons.
Randy was a dedicated landscaper who truly took pride in his work. He began honing his skills with S&S Landscaping in Sylvania, working alongside his cousin Darren Snapp. It was Darren who gave him the nickname “Mantis”, inspired by Randy’s memorable reaction when a praying mantis landed on him one day. Most recently, he was employed with Ranker Lawn Care and Landscaping, where he continued doing the work he loved.
Though he attended Sylvania Northview, Randy was especially proud to have earned his GED in his late 30s. He pursued this achievement not only for himself but to set an example for his children, showing them the importance of education and the value of perseverance.
Throughout his life, Randy enjoyed many interests, but nothing meant more to him than spending time with family and friends, creating lasting memories. He especially cherished camping trips, fishing outings, 4th of July parties with fireworks, nights around the bonfire, and celebrating holidays and special occasions.
As a teen, Randy had a deep love for baseball. He pitched for several teams in the Sylvania Rec Leagues and later passed that passion on to his sons, who all played the game as well. Although he did not continue it into adulthood, he was an avid youth bowler and competed in the Ottawa Lanes Strikers Youth Bowling Club during the late ‘90s, where he was honored as the league's “Bowler of the Year” one year.
Randy had a lifelong passion for motorsports. From riding motocross bikes on local trails in his youth to being a devoted NASCAR fan, he found joy in everything with an engine. He proudly rooted for Dale Earnhardt Sr., then Jr., and more recently, Chase Elliott, though he appreciated many of the rising talents, especially those from Hendrick Motorsports. One of his favorite memories was getting behind the wheel himself during a few thrilling laps in the NASCAR Experience.
In recent years, Randy brought his love of racing into the virtual world. Known by his nickname “Mantis”, he transitioned from using a basic controller to a full driving rig, immersing himself in online racing. He competed in the Hoosier Racing League, winning several races and proudly claiming the league championship in 2023. After his passing, the league honored him with a touching tribute: allowing his two brothers to lead the field for the first two laps in his memory and inducting him into the league’s Hall of Fame in recognition of his many contributions and the mark he left on their community.
Besides the beautiful, vivacious, intelligent, and always submissive love of his life Matasha, Randy is survived by his father, David W. Hall Sr. (Pamela), of Toledo; his four sons, Anthony, Bryant, Blake, and Chase, all of Sylvania; and his two brothers, David W. Hall Jr. of Sylvania and Mike Hall of Toledo. He is also survived by Vern Vogt, his mother’s companion of over 30 years, who the family lovingly called “Grandpa,” along with Vern’s son Brian (Jodi) Vogt and granddaughter, Mila. Randy was also blessed with many extended family members on both sides and friends who have shown overwhelming love and support during this sorrowful time.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 24, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, Ohio. Funeral services will take place on Friday, April 25, at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Keith Sholl of Faith Baptist Church. Following the service, there will be a procession to Toledo Memorial Park, where Randy will be laid to rest. After the graveside, a meal will be provided by Faith Baptist Church, 6245 Whiteford Center Rd., Lambertville, MI, just across the state line.
Randy will be remembered for his humor, his heart, his stories, and the love he so freely gave to those around him. His spirit lives on in every life he touched.
