Phyllis Eck Nordin passed away in Rochester, NY, on July 23, 2013, following three weeks in hospice care. Phyllis was a life-long artist and sculptor in Toledo, leaving 17 major public sculptures installed in Toledo and northwest Ohio, Florida, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Colorado. More wide-spread are smaller personal art objects purchased by corporations, churches, and individuals. She worked in stone, metals, wood, stained glass, and fabrics. Her talents included a trained singing voice. She sang in church choirs her entire life, and several other community groups, including The Toledo Symphony Chorale. In a performance of Hector Berlioz Requiem Mass for the Dead at Rosary Cathedral Phyllis was alto soloist. She loved the body of music of the Christian Church. She briefly taught a college course at Lourdes College on fostering ones personal creativity. Phyllis directed her energies toward creating beauty in the world around her through art and music. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Warren A. Nordin, MD; her daughter, Susan Vinocour, PhD, JD of Rochester, NY and her son, Paul W. Nordin of Emeryville, CA, three grandsons, Joshua Vinocour, PhD of St. Louis, MO, Jonathan Vinocour, MFA of San Francisco, CA and Benjamin, JD and his daughter, Arianna Vinocour of Washington, DC. Phyllis was preceded in death by her son, Eric Nordin. Funeral services will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 West Central Avenue, on Thursday, August 1st, at 1 PM.
