Phillip M. Haubert passed away on October 4, 2026, from complications due to Parkinson's disease. He was 79-years-old.
Born June 13, 1947, in Fremont, OH, to Jerome and Hazel Haubert, he grew up in Gibsonburg, OH, excelling on the football field as a fullback for the Golden Bears. After graduating in 1965, he attended Defiance College, playing football and lacrosse, and earned a Master's degree at the Univ. of Toledo.
At DC, he was an all-conference offensive lineman on the unbeaten 1966 team that won the Mid-Ohio Conference. Among his teammates, 'Beverly Hills Cop' star, John Ashton, and Ben Davis, who later played for the Browns and Lions.
Phil began his teaching and coaching career at Gibsonburg HS, where he coached offensive linemen, including future Ohio State All-American, Ted Smith.
In the 1970's, he moved to Ottawa Hills High School, where, among his students, was national sports-columnist, Christine Brennan. He moved to Sylvania High School, through the separation of Northview and Southview, where he pioneered an aviation program for students that would lead to a new career.
After accruing enough flight time, he became a pilot, flying for several Toledo-based corporations.
His love of flying and muscle cars, paled in comparison to his love for his wife of 58 years, Karen (Bruntz), whom he traveled the world within retirement.
Phil is survived by wife, Karen, son, Eric (Rachel), grandchildren, Tucker and Hailey, sisters, Suzanne (Al) Melroy and Rebecca (Howard) Hall and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, Jerome and Hazel Haubert, step-father, Harry 'Joe' Hansen, and brother, Stephen Haubert.
