Peter W. Brown

Peter Pete William Brown, age 87, of Maumee, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in his home. He was born October 19, 1923 in Gary, Indiana to Peter and Adele Leake Brown. Pete served in the US Army as a Staff Sergeant during WWII. Initially a machinist, he served in England with the Air Corps, was moved to the infantry and ended up working on the Stars and Stripes newspaper in Paris. He was employed as a claims adjuster for Central Mutual Insurance Company for 28 years, sometimes called upon to adjust claims across the country when large catastrophes occurred. Pete enjoyed sailing his boat, playing tennis and bicycling. He ran in several marathons and won numerous awards. Pete knew the value of friendship and immensely enjoyed all of his friends whether they were running, biking or sailing or reminiscing or breakfasting together. Pete loved to grow tomatoes to give to his friends. At 85 years of age, Pete went kayaking for the first time on the Maumee River with family and loved it. Pete got the biggest kick out of being with his grandson, Ben. They hiked in parks, drew pictures, built birdhouses, went sailing and he taught Ben how to ride a bike and play chess. Pete, a southpaw, taught Ben who is right handed, how to hold his pen in a left handed style. To this day, Ben carries this trait from his Papa Pete. A loving father, grandfather and friend, Pete will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. The widower of Renza Brown who passed away February 17, 2009, Pete is survived by his children, Michael Valerie Brown and Kathleen Timothy Clark; and grandson, Benjamin Jennifer White Reed. In addition to his parents and wife, Pete was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Homer Millikan Family and friends may visit Monday, June 20, 2011 from 2-8 pm in the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, where funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 10:00 am.
