Pauline Ruth Gulau, 99, of Oak Harbor, died early Monday morning, April 11, 2011, in Riverview Healthcare Campus, Oak Harbor. Pauline was born November 17, 1911, in Carroll Township to August C. and Minnie M. Wilhelmsen Miller. On June 14, 1942, in Oak Harbor, Ohio, she married Wilton L. Gulau and he preceded her in death April 28, 1991. Her daughter, Geneva Gulau Hines, died in June 1995, and three brothers, Albert, Vernon and Norman Miller preceded her in death. She is survived by sister-in-laws, Hazel and Virginia, nieces, nephews and cousins. Pauline was a graduate of Oak Harbor High School and Bowling Green State College and also attended the University of Toledo. She began her teaching career in 1930 in one-room schools in Carroll Township. She also taught at Lacarne School for six years before teaching 13 years at R.C. Waters Elementary in Oak Harbor. Pauline was an active lifetime member of St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Churcha Sunday School teacher, Junior Mission Band, Luther League and the Esther Circle. She was also a member of the Ottawa County Farm Bureau, the Krosston Farm Bureau Council, Country Culture Club, the Ohio Retired Teachers, the Humane Society and Riverview Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Republican President Committee. Pauline especially enjoyed the outdoors, nature and scientific things. Since retirement she enjoyed greeting former students in person or by phone and letters. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2011, in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 165 E. Water St., Oak Harbor. The funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2011, in St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor, with interment to follow in Union Cemetery.
