Paula was born as Paula Scharf to Lawrence A. Scharf and Catherine (Cleary) Scharf in Fostoria, Ohio, where she grew up with 2 sisters and 2 brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, namely Kathleen Scharf PhD, (2018), Rev. T. Patrick Scharf (2002), and Mary Angela (Scharf) Aplin (2014).
She is survived by her brother, Lawrence Scharf of Toledo, Ohio, and her nephew, Sean Aplin and his family, of Payson, Arizona. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education. She later returned to school and obtained her PhD in Speech Pathology. She was a member of the Peace Corps in the 1960's and served in Iran and the Middle East.
After serving in the Peace Corps, she moved to San Francisco, California. She fell in love with the San Francisco Bay Area, and lived there for more than 50 years, before moving back to the Ohio.
She devoted her life to her career as a speech pathologist for the West Contra Costa Unified School District in Richmond, California. She retired after over 30 years of service teaching. She was very passionate about helping students overcome their learning disabilities. She really enjoyed making life fun! She was always a vocal advocate for human rights and equality for all people!
