Paul Werter Shugar

Paul Werter Shugar, of Maumee, OH, passed away August 18, 2011 at the Elizabeth Scott Community in Maumee, OH. He was born June 23, 1917 in Maumee, OH to Peter and Era Shugar. On June 25, 1943 he married Daisy May Wygant in Brownsville, Texas. A graduate of Maumee High School, he served his country during WWII in 124th Calvary B Troop, one of the last horse Calvary units in the Army. Paul fought in an independent unit supplied by air to cut and hold the Burma Road as part of the MARS Taskforce. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his efforts in that theater of the war. His service during World War II took him literally around the world across the Pacific to the jungles of China-Burma-India CBI Theater, over the Himalaya Mountains, through the Suez Canal and home across the Atlantic seeing five of the Seven Wonders of the World. He worked at Doehler-Jarvis in the die casting department for 45 years retiring in 1982. His hobbies included woodworking, golf, travel, and the restoration of a 1931 Model-A Ford with his son. He was a member of VFW Post 11115 in Maumee, Ohio. Paul felt fortunate to be able to travel on the Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio to visit the WWII Memorial last year. He was also a member of First Families of Lucas County. Mr. Shugar is survived by his children, Paula Donald Shadle of Vermilion, OH and David Candace Shugar of Maumee, OH; grandchildren Gregory Shadle of Erie, PA, Jeffery Shadle of Lorain, OH, Paul Shugar of Cleveland, OH and Mark Shugar of Asheville, NC; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Daisy Wygant, brothers John and Frank Shugar and sister Lucille Elkert and granddaughter Michelle Shadle.
