Paul John Shiple left this earth on April 11, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer. Family members were lucky enough to spend much time with him over the last few months at his side. For that we are very grateful. Married for 68 years to Margaret (Hefner), and together they had 4 children, David (Sandy Falls), Susan Johnson , Linda Latoza (Tom Latoza), and Paul D. Shiple (Michelle Jacobs). Beloved grandchildren were Kristen, Brittany and Melinda Johnson, Sarah and Rachel Latoza, Aaron Shiple and Re Falls. Paul was the first son of John and Magdelene (Hertzfeld), born on November 14, 1923. Siblings include Marcella Haas, Lawrence Shiple and Thelma Beman. Brother Gerald Shiple predeceased Paul. Many loving nieces and nephews survive as well. Paul proudly served his nation during World War II and was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. He is a charter member of the World War II Memorial in Washington DC. As a member of the greatest generation, he went off to war with his neighbors and friends because it was what you were supposed to do. In fact, that summarizes his life: Paul did what he was supposed to do as a father, a son, a brother, a husband and an American. He grew up as a farmer and spent most of his life cultivating the family spread in Perrysburg. Hard work, honesty, loving his wife and taking care of his family were the hallmarks of his life and these values he passed on to his children. He did take time to relax by enjoying Ohio State football and Detroit Tiger baseball but sometimes his passion for his teams got the best of him, another trait he passed on to his kids. Friends will be received from 3-7 P.M. on Thursday at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary St., Perrysburg, OH 43551 (419-874-3133) where funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, April 15, 2016 with burial in Fort Meigs Cemetery. Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2500 N. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, OH 43615.
