Paul D. Epstein passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017 on his 78th birthday. He was born on February 15, 1939 to Benjamin Epstein and Gertrude Erdmann. Paul served in the U.S. Air Force overseas and retired from the Air Force Reserve at the rank of Colonel in 1990. Paul was a Toledo Public School teacher for 26 years, teaching mostly science classes at McTigue Junior High School. He was also very involved with international programs at The University of Toledo, spending many summers assisting with and helping to plan the Summer Seminar in American Society for teachers from Japan who came to Toledo to learn about American culture. He also welcomed many international students to campus, helped them to find housing, and transported them to various places to help them settle comfortably in Toledo. A man of many interests, Paul was an avid collector of coins and stamps, both foreign and domestic; his fascination for them lead him to learn as much as he could about the languages and cultures of those countries, while piquing his interest in travel abroad. Over the course of his life, he visited many countries and embraced many cultures. His travels in the U.S. and abroad also allowed him to pursue his interest in geology and expand his rock and mineral collection. His family will greatly miss his quick wit, calm demeanor and amazing generosity. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Judith (Gruenwald) Epstein and his daughter Miriam Epstein. He is survived by his son, David, daughter, Anne, and wife, Barbara Sayers; and grandchildren, Taylor Jake Epstein. There will be no formal service, but family will gather at his home on Monday, February 20, 2017 to remember him. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the International Rescue Committee,122 E. 42nd Street, New York, NY 10168 in support of the many displaced refugees in the world.
