Dick Day, age 81, passed away September 23, 2009, at Perrysburg Hospice. He is survived by Nancy Dow Day, his beloved wife of 51 years; his six children, Mollie Randy Musbach, Susan Jon Panner, Richard Amy Day, Katherine Phillip Navarre, Robert Day, David Robin Day; 19 grandchildren, and his brother, Willis F. Day. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas R. Day. His family was his joy and they knew him to be a man of integrity, a faithful husband, a kind father, and a servant to the city and the Savior he loved. Born in Toledo, Ohio to Willis and Ernestine Day, Dick graduated from Scott High School in 1945. He served in the Navy at the end of World War II and was later called back during the Korean War. Dick attended the University of Michigan where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. After college he attended Chicago Theological Seminary and did volunteer work among Chicago street gangs. He was president of Willis Day Moving and Storage for many years and retired in 1989. Dick enjoyed playing tennis and swimming, but his favorite pastime was working in the garden and greenhouse where he grew beautiful roses and orchids. Each fall he heard the call of Michigan football and attended countless games. Dick served on many boards and recently received an award from The Boys and Girls Club of Toledo for 55 years of continuous service. He was given the Service to Mankind Award by the Sertoma Club of Toledo. He was a member of Washington Church and served as an Elder. He also served the boards of Grace Community Center, the Miniger Foundation, the United Way, U of M Alumni, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, and as Vice-Chairman of the Medical College of Ohio Foundation, Vice- Chairman of the Port Authority Board. He served on the Red Cross Board and Disaster Committee. Last fall Dick spent many hours working for the Obama campaign helping out in many different ways. Throughout life, faith was his guiding light. His faith was nurtured through years of worship in the community of Washington Church. He had a warm heart for people, found joy in serving, and overflowed with the grace he had received. Our family would like to thank the entire staff of Hospice of Perrysburg for their very special care of Dick and their warmth and friendliness toward all of our family.
