Patrick John “Rick” Sexton, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones at The Lakes of Monclova, Maumee, OH with Heartland Hospice standing by. He was 76. Rick lived a great and memorable life.
A Toledo native, Rick was the eldest child of Richard T. and Mary Jane (Daczkowski) Sexton. He is survived by children, Heather Lynn Sexton and Craig Patrick (Alessandra) Sexton; beloved wife, Susan Sexton; sister, Lynette Reiter; seven nieces and nephews; many great nieces and great nephews; and many close cousins, family of his much loved Aunt Virginia Chapman.
In addition to his parents and Aunt, he was preceded in death by his younger brothers, Larry Sexton and Michael Sexton; and sisters-in-law, Helen Sexton and Patricia Sexton.
Rick was a 1965 graduate of Central Catholic High School. He served locally in the Army Reserves during his college and young family raising years. In 1974, he completed his bachelor’s degree in business from The University of Toledo. After graduation from UT, he started work in the Lily division of Owens-Illinois. His career at OI took him across borders as an internal auditor. He retired from OI in 2012 after 38 years in many rewarding roles there.
In October of 1970, Rick began his most important and cherished role of all, that of becoming a father when he welcomed his daughter, Heather, and then three years later, his son, Craig. Rick adored his kids more than anything and would light up whenever he was with them. He provided them unconditional love and support through their educations, careers, and lives. They in turn, maintained their tight bond with their “Dud,” and supported him to the end of his life.
In 1985, Rick married Susan and together they built a life filled with love, laughter and shared dreams. They devoted themselves to summer boating on Lake Erie. They were active members of the Toledo Yacht Club, The Crews Nest at Put-in-Bay, and founding members of DESYC. They forged lifetime friendships with fellow boaters over 25 years.
Rick resided in his childhood home in West Toledo until 2001 when he and Susan moved to the countryside in Providence Township. There he built his dream garage with a second story to house his cherished pool table. Many lasting memories were made with family and friends at his famous fish fries at his home.
Rick was an active member of the American Pool Players Association (APA), participating in local leagues, tournaments, and national competitions in Las Vegas. His pool table is signed by celebrity players whom he invited to play a tournament in the Garage Mahal.
Rick was the patriarch of his extended family: his siblings, nieces and nephews and Chapman family cousins. He extended guidance and generosity to all of us who knew him. All his many friends and family will remember him as the wise and gentle man that he was. He will be terribly missed. He was always full of antics and playful arguments.
A special thank you to cousins: Jason Powers, Amy and Steve Fitzpatrick, Lauren Powers, and Sue Schick for faithfully standing by Rick in his final months of illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Toledo Humane Society, the American Lung Association, or the Kidney Foundation. It would please Rick to think that those who care for him might perform a random act of kindness in his honor.
