Patrick F. Schad, age 83, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Ebeid Hospice. He was born in Minneapolis, MN on January 5, 1931 to the late Frank and Blanche Schad. He moved from Connecticut to Toledo at the age of 12. After graduating from DeVilbiss High School and the University of Toledo where he played trombone in both their bands, he then served in the 691st Air Force Band from 1951 to 1954 as a musician on Trombone and Piano. Tours included Detroit and the NEACs Newfoundland, where he shared comradery with notable John Williams of The Boston Pops and Star Wars fame. Also, sharing a dorm with John enhanced their friendship and they double dated may times. Pat enjoyed flying with the 100-piece band to entertain troops in other countries and also in combos at the Officers Club with John on special occasions. In 1957, Mr. Schad moved to Detroit, MI and was employed for seven years with Travelers Insurance Company and for thirty-five years for Ohio Casualty as an all-line claims investigator and supervisor. He continued his hobby of music and played many years for the Birmingham and Farmington Hills, Michigan Community Bands. When Mr. Schad retired in 1999, he returned to Toledo to finally marry the only true love in his life, a DeVilbiss High School sweetheart, Barbara Baker (Fox). Their years together provided every happiness that could spring from talent, love and trust. He especially loved to travel and shop at antique shops to pick up flow blue plates to add to his Great-Grandma and Mothers collection even though it meant adding another rack in the kitchen. He also had an eye for fine art going so far as telling the artist to change a color to enjoy the ambiance the painting would add in his home. Pat enjoyed such simple pleasures as remodeling their houses, garden yard work, house parties with friends and attending every symphony, pop, jazz band concert out there. After 40 years, he gave up his trombone to turn to his piano for entertaining. He gave his bone to Scott Rogers with the Toledo Jazz Orchestra so that a student in Scotts music class might have a chance to learn how to play. Up to his death, Pat also enjoyed sharing nostalgic standards by playing piano at the Rouge Bistro, Mac Tongs and Fifis Supper Club. It is hoped there will be music for Pat in the great somewhere. Pat is survived by his wife, Barbara and two sons, Dana and Fred Schad who reside in Florida. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Schad. A Farewell Celebration for all friends and family is planned at Barbaras Daughter and Son-In-Law home at 7851 Brint Road, Windswept Farms, Sylvania, OH on Friday, November 14th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Burial will be private at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank all the nurses and doctors at ProMedica Hospital for the expert care given him during his stays this year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Toledo Jazz Orchestra, P.O. Box 353123, Toledo, OH 43635 or the charity of the donors choice. Life is like a piano - What you get out of it depends on how you play it.
