Patrick "Rick" Nero, age 82, of Genoa, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, in the compassionate care of Riverview Healthcare Campus. Rick was born on April 13, 1943, in Clay Center, Ohio, to the late Victor and Elizabeth (Bertok) Nero. A proud graduate of Genoa High School in the Class of 1961, Rick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly after graduation, serving his country with honor.
Following his military service, Rick met the love of his life, Barbara Mueller, in Alameda, California. The two were married on August 1, 1964, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, laughter, and family adventures. They enjoyed traveling in their younger years, especially taking their children to explore new places and create lasting memories.
Rick began a long and dedicated career in the railroad industry, starting as a brakeman and later working as a conductor, primarily with Norfolk Southern.
Rick had many passions throughout his life. He loved fishing, gardening, and cheering on Notre Dame football and other sports. He was an avid fan of American Pickers and enjoyed trips to the casino. Rick especially cherished a plate of spaghetti and the Hungarian dishes passed down from his parents.
Above all, Rick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family meant everything to him, and he was happiest surrounded by their love.
Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Barbara; children, Laura A. (Donald) Kemley, Mark S. (Kim) Nero, and Thomas D. (Sue) Nero; grandchildren, Raymond (Nicole), Shawn, Holly (Ray), Breanna (Kevin), Megyn (Patrick), Richard (Montana), and Christopher (Amber); and great-grandchildren, Cody, Joslyne, McKenna, Jaxon, Kolton, Jaxson, Kai, and a baby great-granddaughter on the way. He is also survived by his sisters, Susan Nero and Bettylou Cook.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rosemary Oliver and Patricia Nero; and brothers, Joseph, Victor Jr., and Paul Nero.
