Olan D. Snavely passed away peacefully on April 26th, 2014. Born May 10, 1913 he died two weeks prior to his 101st birthday. He was married to his beloved wife , Lucille, who preceded him in death in 1998. He is survived by his two children, Gayle Snavely Medill George and David A. Snavely B.J.. He is also survived by grandchildren David J. Medill Kate, Caitlin E. Acampa John-Claude, D. Robert Snavely and Thomas L. Snavely, as well as great-grandchildren Oliver D. Medill and Grey F. Medill. Olan graduated in 1934 from the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity. In 1935 he graduated from Babson College with a degree in business. He was a past member of Sylvania Country Club, Inverness Club and The Toledo Club. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council and Finance Committee. In recent years he used his talents as a pianist to entertain fellow residents at The Woodlands retirement home. He also played for the Alzheimers Association and other retirement homes. He played music from the 1930s through the 1950 era. In 2000 he received the Presidents Award for Exemplary Service to Senior Citizens given by the Area Office on Aging of Northwest Ohio. He received the 2006 Outstanding Senior Volunteer Silver Award for Exemplary Community Service given by Medical Mutual of Ohio. Olan was employed by Owens-Illinois for 37 years. In post- retirement, he was associated with Hayes Travel Perrysburg. During that period, he and his wife Lucille traveled through Europe, the Orient and the South Pacific. They also cruised through the Panama Canal, the Alaskan Inland Waterway and various ports in the Caribbean. At that time he also was a frequent writer to The Blades Letters to the Editor, voicing his opinions on local Toledo, national and international events. He also contributed numerous articles to The Bend of the River Magazine for many years. His articles were mainly about his early years growing up in Toledo and included landmarks and history of Toledo. The family wishes to thank Sunset House and Visiting Angels, Inc. for their exemplary care of Olan. Memorial services will be private.
