Nina A. Johnson

October 30, 1921 — March 15, 2017

While surrounded by her loving family, Nina A. Johnson of Toledo, Ohio passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Nina was born October 30, 1921 in Tiffin, Ohio, the daughter of Eula Jacob and Ethel Dora Truby. She married Robert E. Johnson on August 24, 1948 after he proved that she was the only girl for him. Bob and Nina raised their family in Toledo, then, in 2006, made their home at Alexis Gardens Retirement Community, where she continued to live after he went to heaven. Together Bob and Nina raised nine children, Raymond (Kathy), Robert A. (Laura), David (Pam), Gerry (Bob) Zemenski, Ken (Joyce), Tom (Brenda), Tim, Suzanne (George) Sears and Mary (Paul) Sweeny. Nina was also the very proud grandmother of 33 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. In addition to the above, Nina is survived by her sister, Nora Lee (Ray) Jeffries, and her special sis-in-law, Mary A. (Homer) Shank. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, son Raymond, parents, and siblings: Dalton (Lillian) Truby, Norman (Grace) Truby, Walter (Loretta) Truby, Henrietta (George) Gray, Lillian (Arthur) Petz and Betty (Bethane) Partin. For decades Nina was a valued member of Second Baptist Church in East Toledo, where she served as Primary Sunday School Teacher, Womens Mission Chair, Board of Education Chair, and anywhere she saw a need. Most recently, Nina was a member of Cass Road Baptist Church in Maumee. With faith in God, wisdom, diplomacy and an incredible sense of humor, Nina lived a full and joyous life of impact. She was gracious, generous, and never lost her ability to laugh. To know Nina was to have a deep love, adoration and respect for her. One of Nina’s strengths was her ability to see good in people. With an incredible servant heart, and out of her love for the Lord, Nina invested many years cooking, cleaning, running errands for, and visiting shut-ins. Nina’s family was extremely important to her and she made sure they always knew she loved them and enjoyed being with them, even to the moment she breathed her last breath on this earth. Eating and playing games with her family brought her great joy. She was fiercely competitive, and always fun! While raising her nine children, Nina was full of wise sayings—and wisecracks—which usually contained a lesson for life, and were always good for a laugh. She was a gifted teacher in life, willing to teach anyone who was willing to learn. Nina was the epitome of unconditional love, patience, and service. She sacrificed luxury and convenience for the sake of her children, teaching by example, the value of love, kindness and selflessness. She loved her family, her friends, and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Nina will be missed for the beautiful woman she was. Visitation will be 1-8 pm Sunday in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) where a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, March 20, 2017. Burial will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial contributions to Cass Road Baptist Church, 1400 Cass Rd., Maumee, OH 43537.
