Nelson “Bud” Berkowitz, 68, of Fremont, OH, passed away, Thursday, April 28, 2016 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family, after a hard fought battle with cancer. Nelson was born on May 14, 1947 in Fremont, OH, the son of Nelson A. and Eileen (Smith) Berkowitz. On December 10, 1966 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Fremont, OH, he married Virginia “Gini” Smith and she survives. Nelson worked for Berk Ford in Port Clinton, OH from 1968 to 1974. He then worked at New Departure in Sandusky, OH from 1974 until his retirement in 1990. Nelson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served on the USS Intrepid. He served two tours during the Vietnam War, where he received the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two campaign stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. Nelson enjoyed gardening, yard work, sprint racing, NASCAR and going to the races at Fremont Speedway and Attica Raceway Park. Every Monday morning he had breakfast at Ala Carte in Port Clinton. He enjoyed visiting friends at Denney’s & Billy’s in Fremont, OH. But he especially loved spending time with his family and friends.. Those left to cherish his memory are: Loving Wife of 49 years: Virginia “Gini” Berkowitz; Son: Mike (Danelle) Berkowitz; Daughter: Kim (Todd Burket) Berkowitz and Granddaughters: Morgan and Alyssa. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Rebecca Berkowitz. Visitation will be 5-8PM, May 13, 2016, at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Clinton, OH. Private family services will be conducted at a later date. Memorial donations in memory of Nelson, may be given to ProMedica Hospice, 430 South Main Street, Clyde, OH 43410 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
